Ext. Magnificent Mile
Erin, Jam and Tia are walking down the sidewalk carrying various shopping bags.
TIA
I can’t believe she put her hand in your crotch.
JAM
Tell me about it. It was like getting felt up by the grim reaper.
ERIN
Ew.
TIA
I can’t believe you’re an escort, Jam
JAM
Do you like your new clutch, Tia?
TIA
(excited) I do.
JAM
Believe it.
Tia raises her hand to give Jam a high five. Jam leaves her hanging. Tia plays it off by waving at a stranger that passed the trio on the sidewalk. The stranger gives Tia a weird look.
ERIN
So, what are you going to do about Grabby McGrab Grab?
JAM
Nothing. That’s your job, pimp.
ERIN
Really?
JAM
Yep. Either you tell Helena to keep her hands to herself or add another five hundred to the book rate.
ERIN
God, I love you.
Jam and Erin high five. Erin stops in front of a coffee shop causing Jam and Tia to stop too.
ERIN
I have to go in here for a minute.
JAM
Why?
ERIN
Mitch wants to talk.
JAM
I was wondering why we came this way. The stores over here suck.
ERIN
I think he want to have “the talk.”
JAM
I hope not.
ERIN
I hope so. I really like him.
JAM
Well, if you like it I love it.
ERIN
Thanks. Will you wait for me?
TIA
Yes.
JAM
No. We’ll meet you at home. Come on Tia.
Jam walks away and Tia follows. Erin enters the coffee shop. The camera stays with Jam and Tia.
TIA
Is Mitch Erin’s boyfriend.
JAM
Kinda but not really.
TIA
You don’t like him do you?
JAM
Not at all. He’s a jerk.
TIA
Erin doesn’t think so.
JAM
Erin’s in love. She doesn’t think.
TIA
Oh. (beat) Do you have a kinda but not really?
JAM
Negative Ghost Rider.
TIA
Good.
Jam stops and turns towards Tia.
JAM
What does that mean?
TIA
What?
Jam and Tia stare at each other. Jam is trying to read Tia but Tia’s face is unrevealing. After a beat…
JAM
Let’s get some shoes.
TIA
Let’s.
Jam and Tia walk towards a shoe store.

Int. Coffee shop
Erin is sitting at a table across from Mitch. Next to Mitch is a large brown paper bag.
MITCH
Are you sure?
ERIN
I think I would know if I’m fine, Mitch.
MITCH
Fine. (beat) Aren’t you going to ask me?
ERIN
Ask you what?
MITCH
Ask me how I’m doing?
ERIN
How are you doing, Mitch?
MITCH
I’m fine.
ERIN
Are you sure?
MITCH
That’s a stupid question.
Erin sighs then musters a smile.
MITCH
Anyway, I asked you to meet me because I have something really important that I want to say to you in regards to you and I.
ERIN
(excited) Really.
MITCH
But first…
Mitch reaches into the brown paper bag and pulls out a bouquet of two dozen roses. He hands them to Erin.
ERIN
(faking excitement) Roses.
MITCH
Two dozen.
ERIN
Mitch, I hate roses.
MITCH
Roses are romantic.
ERIN
Yeah. If you like roses. I like daisies.
MITCH
You told me that.
ERIN
And yet, you got me roses.
MITCH
But that’s not all.
Mitch reaches into the brown paper bag and pulls out a paperback copy of Fahrenheit 451. He hands it to Erin.
ERIN
(faking excitement) A book.
MITCH
A classic.
ERIN
Okay.
MITCH
It’s a great story.
ERIN
I saw the movie.
MITCH
The book is better. And in it Bradbury explains how the government created a society of nonreaders through the use of magazines.
Erin slams the book on the table
ERIN
Seriously.
MITCH
Erin. If it’s not a book, it’s not worth reading.
ERIN
I can’t believe you. I’m out of here.
Erin stands up to leave.
MITCH
Erin. Wait.
Erin stops
MITCH
There’s something I need to say to you.
Erin sits back down.

MITCH
I…well…see…okay, so there’s this kind of fly that only lives for four hours right and…
ERIN
Mitch. Let me make this easy for you. Just say "Erin, I love you and I want to be with you."
Mitch sits in silence for a beat staring at Erin who is staring back at him. Mitch reaches into the brown paper bag and pulls out a card. He hands it to Erin.
ERIN
What is this?
MITCH
It’s a card. A very expensive card. It’s part of a collection by this French novelist, translated of course, and the language très profondes. This card captures exactly how I feel about you and says everything that I want to say to you.
Erin tosses the card onto the table and gets up.
ERIN
Goodbye, Mitch.
Erin makes for the exit. Mitch stands up.
MITCH
You’re not even going to read the card.
Erin spins around.
