Greetings, good people! Seth K. Thomas here, and this was going to be my artist spotlight, but I decided to pivot because you know me already. I want to put the spotlight on sketch comedy, the backbone of the comedy world. It's time to give sketch comedy its flowers.
Sketch comedy (brief, humorous scenes or vignettes, often character-driven, that highlight absurd, satirical, or exaggerated situations) has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up on reruns of The Benny Hill Show, Hee Haw, and Laugh-In. Shows like The Carol Burnett Show, In Living Color, and, of course, Saturday Night Live inspired me to get into acting and comedy.
Unlike standup comedy, which is a comedian, a microphone, and their truth, sketch comedy has its roots in live theater. It requires the passion, purpose, power, and projection that live theater demands.
Though it doesn't get the attention it deserves, sketch comedy has a rich history in the world of comedy. And its practitioners are everywhere.
Check out this list of comedians that started in sketch comedy, and I promise you will spot no less than 13 of your favorite comedic actors.
Check out this Rolling Stone list of the 40 Greatest Sketch Comedy Shows of all time and find a new favorite show. (I can't believe Little Britain is #38).
Lastly, I implore you to find and support sketch comedy wherever you are. If you're in: Atlanta - Dad's Garage. Washington, D.C. - Rails Comedy. Dallas - Dallas Comedy Club New York City - the PIT. Chicago - The Second City and The Annoyance Los Angeles - UCB, The Pack...
...and the HIT Theater, where you can catch me on Saturday, July 12th at 10 pm.
Long Live Sketch Comedy! |
